Anesthesia & Pain Protocols

Anesthetic Protocol

These are examples of typical protocols for your general reference. Anesthetic protocol will be adjusted on a case-by-case basis, depending on the individual needs of the patient or the procedure. If there is a drug you do not carry, we will either provide it or work around it.

Premeds:

  • Cerenia 1mg/kg

  • Hydromorphone 0.1mg/kg (dogs)   - or -   Zorbium (cats)

  • Midazolam 0.25mg/kg

Induction:

  • Propofol 4-6mg/kg, rounded up by 30-50% so we have extra for intraop use if need be

Prophylactic antibiotics:

  • Cefazolin 22mg/kg -or- Convenia 8mg/kg depending on patient size, procedure, etc

Nocita:

  • Infused into every tissue layer and muscle belly disturbed during surgery (unless specifically contraindicated)

Postop:

  • NSAID injection upon extubation, if appropriate
    Buprenorphine 0.02mg/kg IV, 3-4 hours after hydromorphone was given

Recommended Prescriptions

Orthopedics:

  • Gabapentin 10-20mg/kg BID-TID x 7 days, then PRN up to 8 weeks

  • NSAID daily x 3-4 weeks, then PRN up to 6 months

  • Antibiotics:

    • Small pets, picky eaters, compromised skin: Convenia injection

    • Otherwise: cefpodoxime 5-10 mg/kg SID x 7 days

  • Trazodone 3-7mg/kg BID PRN for sedation

  • Joint supplement (if indicated):  Antinol

    • Ingredients:

      • Green-lipped mussel extract (125x more potent than green-lipped mussel powder, 100x more potent than fish oil)

      • Vitamin E (antioxidant)

      • Olive oil (improves intestinal absorption)

    • 90% of patients show improved mobility

    • Backed by independent research and third-party analysis

    • Member of National Animal Supplement Council (NASC)

    • Successfully passed a comprehensive third-party audit

    • Maintains ongoing compliance with random independent product testing and biennial audits

    • May also help with skin/coat, heart health, and brain function – studies are underway

    • No known drug interactions

    • Allergies or adverse reactions are exceptionally rare

Soft Tissue:

  • Gabapentin 10-20mg/kg BID-TID x 5 days, then PRN up to 2 weeks

  • NSAID daily x 2 weeks

  • Antibiotics:

    • Small pets, picky eaters, compromised skin: Convenia injection

    • Otherwise: cefpodoxime 5-10 mg/kg SID x 7-14 days

  • Trazodone 3-7mg/kg BID PRN for sedation
